Linderhof am Morgen is a new fragrance by Charles Wong, created in collaboration with the Grasse perfumer Richard Asfour and dedicated to the splendid beauty of Linderhof Palace in Munich and the unique person behind its construction.
A hopeless dreamer and romantic, King Ludwig II of Bavaria was much more interested in art than politics, war, and state affairs, which displeased his government and court.
Joseph Albert, Portrait of Ling Ludwig II of Bavaria, 1884
He spent his time, effort, and government’s money on building magnificent castles and palaces, only one of which was completed during his lifetime – Linderhof.
Inspired by the luxury of Versailles, the palace of the French Sun-King Louis XVI, who was an idol for Ludwig II, Linderhof became its miniature but no less luxurious copy.
Jenny Bergensten, from 1880 until 1900
Just like his inspirer, Ludwig earned the nickname in life and more than one.
He was called the Swan King for his childhood spent in the Hohenschwangau Castle surrounded by murals, illustrating medieval German romances such as Parzival and the story of Lohengrin, the Knight of the Swan.
It was Ludwig II who later sponsored Richard Wagner’s operas Lohengrin and Parsifal.
For his dreaminess and dreamlike buildings, he was called the Fairy King, while the nickname of the Moon King was given to him for work at night and rest during the day.
Jenny Bergensten, from 1880 until 1900
Even though the Bavarians loved and accepted Ludwig II, the government had a different opinion on how the king should behave.
After 22 years on the throne, he was declared insane, secretly taken to the Berg Castle, and the next day found dead under mysterious circumstances.
A truly beautiful and sad story about a man who built castles both in the air and reality.
The story that continues to inspire after all this time.
Linderhof am Morgen by Charles Wong Review
This perfume begins to tell its story not with a scent but a signature bottle decorated manually by Charles Wong, following the style of his first fragrance Aurora.
The velvet ribbons in two colors are not meaningless: the leaf-green ribbon represents the greenery of the Armer Forest in which Linderhof is located, while the blue one represents the flag and coat of arms of the Bavaria Kingdom.
The silver-grey wax seal with a capital «A», for its part, is an homage to the tradition of hand-written letters.
But what does the scent of this perfume tell us?
It tells us about the serenity and harmony of Linderhof Palace in the early morning when the only sounds that break the silence are the singing of birds, the breath of the wind, and the soothing sound of the trickling water in the fountain.
Despite the abundance of notes, including some exotic ones, Linderhof am Morgen sounds delicate, comforting, and indeed romantic.
Hyacinth, peony, jasmine, and other flowers create a beautiful bouquet that fills the air with its floral softness and sensuality perfectly complemented by fruity nuances.
A delightful blend of benzoin, vanilla, and tonka bean brings refined sweetness to Linderhof am Morgen, while amber and cashmere make it sound warm and lingering.
This perfume also includes such a unique ingredient as the Japanese Tofu, which was added upon request of Charles Wong to reflect the purity and lightness of the white swan feather in homage to the Swan King.
By the way, purity and lightness are two words that can definitely be used to describe this fragrance.
Linderhof am Morgen is the charming fragrant embodiment of the beauty of a place that was a fantasy and became a reality for one king, a hopeless dreamer and romantic.
Notes: Hyacinth, Rhubarb, Green Notes, Buchu, Japanese Tofu Cream, Peony, Fig, Orange Blossom, Mimosa, Jasmine, Peach, Cedarwood, Tonka Bean, Amber, Benzoin, Vanilla, Cashmere.
