Being the talented photographer, prodigious makeup artist, and perfumer, Serge Lutens makes everything with his own style and vision. I will not tell you the biography of this unique person, you can easily find it by yourself.
Today I review Feminite du Bois Serge Lutens, amazing and revolutionary woody-floral fragrance.
The Origin of Feminite du Bois
Feminite du Bois was first released in 1992 under the brand Shiseido, for which Serge Lutens worked as creative director. The idea of Feminite du Bois belongs to Serge Lutens, while the perfume has been created by the perfumers Pierre Bourdon and Christopher Sheldrake.
This fragrance was dedicated to the duality of the nature of woman and to another side of femininity, its masculine part. From French, Feminite du Bois is translated as femininity of the wood and this perfume is based around the note of cedarwood.
Including the note of cedarwood in perfumes for women was revolutionary at that time. Before Feminite du Bois by Shiseido, this note was one of the main notes of fragrances for men.
But Serge Lutens had his own vision of feminine nature and this vision has made Feminite du Bois perfume incredibly famous.
A little bit later in Paris was opened the boutique Les Salons du Palais Royal Shiseido specifically for one product – Feminite du Bois perfume.
In 2009 Feminite du Bois appeared already under the own brand of Serge Lutens. Today we have an enormous number of masterpieces of fine perfumery by this perfume house. All fragrances are full of sense and they tell the stories of their author.
The perfumes by Serge Lutens are the poetry of scents, poetry of life, emotions, and feelings.
Perfume review of Feminite du Bois Serge Lutens
Feminite du Bois opens with the strong woody-spicy scent. Cedarwood gives its dry and soft woody aroma and makes the spicy notes even more expressive. Clove and cinnamon notes create a perfect duo and make the sound of Feminite du Bois a little dusty.
The notes of plum and peach give their almost transparent fruity scent.
Floral bouquet in the heart of Feminite du Bois consists of delightful and sweet ylang-ylang, powdery violet, slightly bitter orange flower and tender rose. Ginger frames this floral bouquet with its specific spicy scent.
Sandalwood in the base of this perfume makes all composition even more woody and gives its alluring creamy scent. Vanilla and benzoin give their warm and balsamic sound, while the note of musk makes Feminite du Bois sensual and a little wild.
Feminite du Bois is very tender, but expressive woody-floral perfume with the strong spicy notes. It is not too loud, but I feel this perfume even at the end of the day.
It is very elegant, memorable and tantalizing fragrance which have all chances to become a signature perfume.
Talking about mood, Feminite du Bois by Serge Lutens is very meditative, contemplative and deep perfume. This scent creates a very special aura and atmosphere around you. Aura of mystique, sensuality, and passion.
At the same time, Feminite du Bois has something very tempting and impressive. This perfume is dedicated to the duality of women, and as for me, it epitomizes this duality perfectly.
Feminite du Bois is like a charming forest or any other place in the world, where you can feel yourself free, express yourself fully and do not afraid to be really alive.
A little foggy, dry, but very beautiful, this perfume appeals to the depth of the soul. And who knows what is hidden inside?

If it were a color, it would be soft gray with pale pink and purple.
If it were one word, it would be the ambivalence.
Comparison with Feminite du Bois Shiseido
Thanks to one person, that I appreciate so much, I had a chance to try the original version of Feminite du Bois by Shiseido, that unfortunately was discontinued.
As compared with the version by Serge Lutens, Feminite du Bois by Shiseido is even more tender and warmer.
In Shiseido version, I feel more fruity notes, their sweetness, and softness, while the modern version by Serge Lutens is more spicy-woody and has more freshness as for me.
Feminine du Bois by Shiseido has a stronger animalic accent. This version is also a little bit more balsamic for me, apparently because of the note of honey in composition.
On the other hand, we have the version by Serge Lutens, where the woody accent is brighter and stronger.
I would never say that one of the versions is better than other. They are very similar, but at the same time different. Both versions of Feminite du Bois have their unique charm and beauty and they both are wonderful.
